The first six steps to a well-dressed window

The most important reason we cover our windows is to control natural light. Blinds and shades can be adjusted up and down to maintain a comfortable light level.

Another reason, unless you live on a desert island, is for privacy. You may get on well with your neighbours, but you don’t want to share everything. Many blinds and shades can be adjusted to completely black out your windows after dark.

An increasingly important reason for window dressing is insulation – keeping out cold in winter and heat in summer. Snug-fitting cellular shades, perhaps covered with overlapping drapes, will cut down on drafts.

It’s your window, in your house, so feel free to choose your own style. Familiarize yourself with all the kinds of window coverings available – not just cellular but roller shades, wood blinds, venetians, floor to ceiling panels, and roman shades to add a touch of class.

Spend as much as you like, or as little as you like. Window products come at all price levels. The luxury hand-made mahogany blinds may be beyond your reach, but the same look may well be available in man-made materials.

If you find yourself at a dead end, unable to make up your mind, ask for help. Not from your yoga class but from a retailer who knows window fashions inside and out. Many provide home shopping services, a perfect way to get answers that work.
